Des Moines Historical Society Museum

Although not an original member of the King County Snapshots project, the Des Moines Historical Society Museum added their database, entitled Pieces of the Past, to this site in June 2007.

Des Moines Historical Society was formed out of the Des Moines-Zenith Improvement Club in 1978 to continue the collection and preservation of the area's history begun for the American Revolution Bicentennial celebration. General meetings are held five times a year presenting topics relevant to the local area (Redondo, Woodmont, Zenith, Midway, Des Moines, North Hill, Maywood, Normandy Park, Manhattan and Angle Lake). Visit www.dmhs.org for more information.

Images for this site are part of the over 1,500 pictures that have been scanned by the society to make the photo collection more accessible and preserve the original items. With the financial help of Friends of the Des Moines Library and King County Library System Foundation, Pieces of the Past debuted in 2004. In 2005 professional storyteller Joe McHugh interviewed 11 long-time residents, who were "natives" and "transplants." On this site you can hear and read their interviews. They'll inform, enlighten and perhaps even move you.
