Alphabets

If there is a single "genre" of children's books that appeals to both adults and children it is the alphabet book. Children love its simplicity and familiarity, adults admire the artists' ingenuity and aesthetics. Recently there came up for auction a collection of alphabet books to be sold as one lot. These alphabet books, nearly 900 of them, had been collected in the 1930s and 1940s by a single person, and apparently placed into storage. The collection contained works that were published in several languages and between the early 18th century and mid 20th century. The collection is now being dispersed, one book at a time, to hundreds of other collections of alphabet books-including that of the University of Washington.

My New Alphabet Book

MY NEW ALPHABET BOOK. London: The Religious Tract Society, 1884.

The Religious Tract Society was an "unsectarian organization for the preparation and circulation of evangelical tracts" founded in 1799 by the Reverend George Burden, a Congregationalist of Coventry. It recognized that the literacy of the poor need not be confined to the Bible. Beginning in 1812 it turned its attention to books for children. They published the then popular "pious, joyful child-death stories...many of them designed for the Sunday school reward-book market." The Society's guidelines insisted on "earnest, moral and natural tales with minimal excitement in order to leave the reader calm in spirit."
