Geographic Origin

The map of Europe looked quite different during the Middle Ages. The Holy Roman Empire covered most of Western Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, eastern France, The Netherlands, and Belgium), with the boundaries and kingdoms that comprised it varying over time. Spain and Italy were made up of smaller kingdoms (Aragon and Castile in Spain; Naples, Sicily and the Papal States in Italy.)

However, for this database, we have assigned Country of Origin to the countries that exist today, except that we list Flanders (Belgium + the southern Netherlands) as a separate entity: England, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Flanders, Spain, Italy.
