About the Cataloging
The Dublin Core Metadata element set is used to create basic object cataloging structure.
CONTENTdm software provides a flexible template, which is customized for each collection.
UW Libraries' Metadata Implementation Group develops and promotes metadata standards for digital projects and provides data dictionaries and Dublin Core mappings. You can view the Data Dictionaries for the metadata used in these collections. All collections use controlled vocabulary from Library of Congress Thesaurus for Graphic Materials and Library of Congress Subject Headings.
We have made every effort to be thorough and accurate in our cataloging of these images. Two Metadata Specialists hired for the project worked with staff members, volunteers, and subject specialists at all twelve partner organizations. They transcribed information written on the image, image sleeve, or filed with the image; combed through written or electronic registries of the images; interviewed donors or collectors with first-hand knowledge of the images; and did some secondary-source research on the historical context of the images. The sources of the information are noted in each record's Notes field. Although at times this language may seem outdated or offensive, it is included because it is primary source documentation of the historical image.
Please contact the appropriate organization if you have additional information or corrections.
