Lake Fusaro
The accompanying engraving gives a general view of Lake Fusaro (The Avernus of the ancients), showing here and there the stakes surrounding the artificial banks, the single and double ranges of stakes on which the faggots are suspended, and at one extremity the labyrinths, in the face of which is canal of from 2 1/2 to 3 metres broad and 1 1/2 metre deep joining the lake to the sea. A small lake, believed the be the ancient Cocytus, communicates with this canal. The pavilion in the lake is the ordinary residence of the persons in charge of the fishery.

Ice Bridge and Mounds, Niagara Falls
The grandeur and loveliness of the Niagara Falls is replaced in winter by a not less majestic but more forbidding aspect. The mighty sweep of the waters does not allow of any formation of ice in the rapids above or below the falls, but at the edges of the river, in the shallows, mighty columns and pillars of crystal are piled up in the shape of huge mounds, on which the snows of heaven descend to add their pure white to the glistening green of the rushing waters, the deep purple of the ice behind the flowing cutain and the brilliant hues of the giant icicles reflecting the rays of the sun. And however long a visitor may linger, new beauties will present themselves, and the greater will be his appreciation with every moment.
