Ancient Seal of Boro9ugh of Colchester
This seal dates from about the year 1189. On the reverse under the Castle, the Fishery of the town is heraldically indicated in three panels or compartments. The obverse bears a representation of St. Helena, patron saint of Colchester, and reputed daughter of King Coel of Colchester ("Old King Cole"). The inscription is: "Quam Crux Insignit Helenam Colcestria Gignit" (Colchester is the birth-place of Helena whom the cross makes famous). On the reverse: "Colcestrensis sum Burgi Commune Sigillum" (I am the common seal of the Borough of Colcester).

Type of basked rake used for deep water quahauging on Cape Cod. It consists of an iron framework, forming a curved bowl, the under-edge of which is set with thin steel teeth varying in length from 2 to 4 inches, though usually 2 1/2 inch teeth are preferred. Over the bowl of this rake, which is strengthened by side and cross pieces of iron, is fitted a twine net, which, like the net of a scallop dredge, drags behind the framework. An average rake has from 19 to 21 teeth and weighs from 15 to 20 pounds.

The harbor, represented by the dotted lines, is bounded on the north and west by a clam flat of coarse sand. The channel connecting the Powder Hole with the ocean passes across this flat. The deepest water, 18 feet, is found near the clam flat, while in the eastern and southern parts of the harbor the shallow water is filled with a thick growth of eelgrass.

The dam is of the slope type with a comb-stick, and is built of timber cribs filled with riprap. The length is 268 feet, with a base width of 80 feet and a lift of 15 1 feet. The original structure was completed about 1840, but has been practically rebuilt several times since then.

The Dam is of the step type and built of timber cribs filled with riprap. The length is 350 feet, with a base width of 60 feet. The lift is 15 1/2 feet. The dam was completed in 1897.

The water is sufficiently deep to allow the cases to be rarely exposed. Oyster growth is extremely rapid; an instance of half an inch of shell growth in a month is recorded. Cases are naturally covered with filamentous sea salad, ulva, which protects the oyster against light and heat and gives attachment and shelter to the rapidly growing oyster food

Bliss No.15 Automatic Round Can Flanger.--An entirely automatic machine of the four chuck type, continuous in operation and positive in action. It produces a perfect and uniform flange. The movement of the chucks is comparatively slow and the bodies are flanged without danger of cracking the tin. It is arranged with automatic body feed and handles can bodies from 2 to 6 5/8 inches in diameter by 2 to 7 inches in height, at the rate of 100 to 150 a minute. The friction clutch with which it is provided gives instant control.

These scallkops have not yet spawned, and, for the future welfare of the scallop fishery, should be protected until they have passed the spawning period, which occurs when the scallop is one year old. The capture of these immature scallops is a decided menace to the fishery, and is forbidden by law
