42. Paralichthys. Group of Paralichthys on a white background containing considerable debris scattered over it. All of the specimens are albiguttus except the large one above and to the left, which is dentalus. Note that this specimen has five dark areas, two rather inconspicuous ones near the head and three near the posterior end. In some specimens there are several others nearly as conspicuous as these. In albiguttus there are but three, the two near the posterior end of the base of the fin being absent. The difference in shade in the different individuals is largely due to difference in their past experience

44. Link Between the East and West Indies
Palaeopneustes hemingi, Anderson, a Sea-urchin discovered by Dr. A. R. S. Anderson in the depths of the Laccadive Sea. It is hardly different from the Palaeopneustes cristatus dredged by Professor Agassiz off the West Indies. The shell has been denuded of its spines, so as to lay bare its sculpture

46. Bliss No. 1K Semi-Automatic Water Tester.--A machine for testing round or square cans from 1 1/2 to 6 3/4 inches in diamter by 1 1/2 to 6 inches in length, or the equivalent. Adapted for sanitary cans. It may also be arranged for larger work. Some of the different style cans, for the testing of which it is used, are shown in the illustration. The output, which depends on the size of can and the expertness of the operator, is from 4,000 to 10,000 cans a day.

47. Bliss No.253 Double End Flanging Machine.--This machine rapidly flanges both ends of can bodies (soldered or lock seamed) in preparation for double seaming tops and bottoms. A special patented device prevents the receding of the tail sotck during the operation, insuring univorm and even flanges. It will handle bodies 2 to 8 1/2 inches in diameter by 2 to 10 3/4 inches in height, and is easily adjusted for different sizes of cans.

48. Scallops: Variation in size of scallops. The two on the left are fifteen months old, while the two on the right are 'seed' scallops three months old. The difference in size in scallops of the same age, especially in different localities, renders impossible the definition of a 'seed' scallop by means of a size limit

49. Nassa obsoleta (the little black winkle of the tide flats) devouring a scallop. These little scavengers swarm over the scallop. Occasionally one is active enough to get between the valves, forming a wedge which permits the entrance of others, which quickly consume the scallop. Owing to the alertness of the scallop and its different habitat (Nassa usually being found on the tide flats) little damage is done

50. Graphic representation of the growth of the average scallop and its gain in volume. Starting September 1 with 1 bushel of 1/2-inch scallops, the increase in volume is represented on the right in terms of bushels, corresponding to the different sized scallops on the left: (1) two-month scallop, .5 of an inch, 1 bushel; (2) three-month scallop, .91 of an inch, 7.3 bushels; (3) five-month scallop, 1.34 inches, 26.5 bushels; (4) thirteen month scallop, 1.75 inches, 62 bushels; (5) seventeen-month scallop, 2.41 inches, 185.6 bushels.... This repid increase shows the benefit of preserving the 'seed' scallop, as the yield in large scallops will more than repay the fisherman for his foresight

52. Placing cheese-cloth retainers over nests containing bass fry about ready to swim up. Most of the nests are seen covered with retainers. When a nest is occupied it is numbered and complete record kept of its different stages. The retainers are to confine the fry for convenience in transferring to other ponds to make room for following broods. (Mammoth Hot Springs, Arkansas)
