Newhalem is the first company town at the Skagit River project, settled to house workers for the Gorge Dam and powerhouse construction, 1920.

Ladder Creek Falls and Rock Gardens are located behind the Gorge powerhouse on two acres of land to the south and southeast in Newhalem.
