Summary of interview: Han Shan of the Ruckus Society discusses his organization's involvement with other groups -- including RAN, Global Exchange, and DAN -- at the WTO protests. He describes the civil disobedience strategies used during the protests, and Ruckus' focus on corporate globalization issues and environment. Shan explains how Ruckus grew out of Greenpeace and sponsored action camps designed to promote grassroots efforts. Shan says that although some labor union representatives were concerned about Ruckus' emphasis on civil disobedience, including tactics of blocking streets and hanging banners, they did work and stay in contact with each other at the protests. Ruckus' goal, says Shan, is to maintain support from smaller, loosely affiliated groups around the country while concentrating on the environment, social justice, human rights and labor issues.
