Summary of interview: Asia Pacific Environmental Exchange (APEX) is a non-profit, non-governmental international environmental organization. One project affiliated with APEX is Basel Action Network, working on issues concerning toxics dumped on developing countries. Both members of APEX (Dave Baxter and Jim Puckett) have worked with Greenpeace and others working on international toxic campaigns. Both members were in Seattle educating local activists on globalization and the problems of traditional economic models, as well as educating the press and therefore the public. APEX was responsible for sending out reports on the WTO, some including toxics and how it relates the WTO to public health issues. These reports helped journalists and the public question the WTO and were released locally and internationally. APEX also provided about fifteen billboards with issues from animal rights, labor, environmental and farm groups. APEX brought mainstream groups and direct action-oriented groups together, including organized labor. Internet use helped in the release of international reports, disseminating the work of activism, and helping APEX form coalitions. APEX has many contacts and links worldwide, although based in Seattle, Washington. One member of APEX is working on an alternative economic model to the WTO. Another goal is to show that WTO is spreading poison around the planet.
