PhotographerWaite, Alvin H. (Alvin Henry), 1862-1929
Date1897
NotesNotes in inventory: On Mount Tacoma. Between the Carbon and North Mowich glaciers. Looking down Carbon Glacier and Canyon. From Moraine Park. Altitude about 6000 ft.

The Carbon Glacier is on the north slope of Mount Rainier. It is five and a half miles long with a 10, 600-ft. maximum elevation, extending from Willis Wall to the headwaters of the Carbon River. It is claimed to be the lowest perpetual ice field in the United States. The name is for the coal which was found in quantity along the upper reaches of Carbon River.

Moraine Park is on the northern slope of Mount Rainier east of Moraine Creek, between Carbon Glacier and Old Desolate mountain in the north central zone of the national park. This descriptive name was chosen by Prof. I. C. Russell in 1890. The park is a succession of glacial moraines along the east side of lower Carbon Glacier.
