NotesNotes in inventory: Tumwater, Wash. Upper Falls in Deschutes River

The Deschutes River rises in southeast Thurston County and flows 23 miles northwesterly to Budd Inlet at Olympia. Originally the river had names in several Indian languages, including Low-hum, Pu-kal-Bush, Pac-al-ups, To-war-na-hi-ooks and Dus-chut-wit.. The present name is a French-Canadian translation of the latter name into Des Chutes, meaning waterfall or cataract. It refers to the falls at Tumwater.

Tumwater was the first American settlement on Puget Sound. It is on the Deschutes River and adjoins Olympia on the south in central Thurston County. Indian names for the place, relating to the falls in Deschutes River were Tum-chuck, Tum-wa-ta, and Spa-kwatl. Each had the meaning of strong water or water fall. It was named in 1845, when Col. Michael T. Simmons and his party settled at what they called New Market as opposed to the old market at Fort Nisqually. Other names that have been used are Falls River and Des Chutes.
