TitleSteamship MULTNOMAH viewed from rustic bridge in Point Defiance Park, Tacoma, July 26, 1898
PhotographerWaite, Alvin H. (Alvin Henry), 1862-1929
Date1898
NotesNotes in inventory: Tacoma, Wash. Steamer Multnomah from Rustic Bridge in Point Defiance Park.

Point Defiance is at the north entrance to The Narrows on Dalco Passage at the northern end of Tacoma in northwest Pierce County. The point was named by Cmdr. Charles Wilkes, who stated that "This narrow pass was intended by nature for the defence of Puget Sound." The name he selected reflects this idea. While Hudson's Bay Company maintained posts and operations in this area, they referred to it as Point Ryan. Their name did not persist. The Tacoma city park at Point Defiance with its zoo, old growth forest and gardens is one of the premier public parks on the West Coast.
