NotesNotes in inventory: Tacoma, Wash. Mount Tacoma from Indian Reservation looking up Puyallup River. Copyright [illeg.]

The Puyallup Tribe is part of the Puget Sound Salish Indian culture, which flourished in the Pacific Northwest. As with other Northwest tribes, salmon is central in their life as a main food and ceremonial symbol. The western red cedar was traditionally used for clothing, basketry, and housing. Tribal ancestors hunted, fished, and gathered for subsistence. Tribal lands encompassed Pierce County, on the southern end of the Puget Sound. Today, Tribal headquarters are located in Tacoma. Their urban reservation is a checkerboard of land owned by the tribe, tribal members and non-Indians. After years of negotiation in the 1980s, the tribe gave up title to tidelands in the Port of Tacoma in return for cash and land worth more than $150 million.
