Newspaper captions attached to verso: Eight University of Washington crew shells manned by Husky oarsmen row smoothly past the towering masts of Lake Union's old sailing ships. Such crews, which carried the Huskies to numerous intercollegiate racing titles at the annual Poughkeepsie regattas, were first developed by Hiram Conibear, originally ineffectual Washington racing crew coach.
Past towering masts of Lake Union's old sailing ships rowed eight University of Washington crew shells yesterday afternoon, as the Husky oarsmen continued their workouts for the 1940 season, begun last week. In the foreground the coaching launch, with Head Coach Al Ulbrickson and his assistants aboard, follows the progress of the young giants who hope to bring Washington victory over its crew rivals when spring and summer roll around. It was a bright, clear day, but the air was nippy for Photographer Paul Wagner, who hung over the rail of a ship to snap this picture. The crewmen, however, were working up a pretty good glow at their labors. They're green now, but Ulbrickson, who has sent many a Washington eight to national laurels, will have them rowing smoothly for the April 20 regatta with California and, in June, the historic intercollegiate tests at Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
