| Contextual Notes | The WEST SEATTLE was built in 1907 at the Heath yard in Tacoma for the West Seattle Land & Improvement Co. The new double-ended ferry, hailed as the largest and finest such bessel built on the Pacific Coast north of San Francisco, was 160 feet in overall length, with a width over the guards of 48 feet, 6 inches. It was noted that "automobiles will be able to drive upon the ferry from the dock without the least trouble." The brightly painted red and white ferry set a precendent and tradition for the fleet of such vessels which was to follow her by failing to reverse her engines and smashing into her slip at the foot of Marion Street with a resounding crash on July 25, 1907, soon after going into service.
