| Contextual Notes | The body of water that present-day Whittier, Alaska, perches beside was known in 1941 as "Portage Bay." It later became referred to in official papers as "Passage Bay" and the military eventually adopted that new name. Within a few years, however, the common name changed again to "Passage Canal", a name later cemented by usage on USGS and nautical charts. It has, at various times in the past, been called "Chugatskoii Bay", "Chugach Bay", "West Chugach Bay", "Portage Bay", "Portage Fjord", "Portage Canal" and "Passage Bay." Finally, today the body of water remains known as "Passage Canal."
