| Contextual Notes | Lee Moorhouse was born in Iowa on February 28, 1850. He moved to Walla Walla, Washington in 1861 where he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel in the militia during the Bannock War. After the war, Moorhouse worked as a farmer and opened a general store in Pendleton, Oregon where he also served as mayor for several years. In 1889 he was assigned the job of agent at the Umatilla reservation where he began taking photographs of the Cayuse and Nez Perce tribes. Moorhouse sold these photographs and published several books of his images. |
