Kihachi Hirakawa was born in 1864 near the city of Tokyo, Japan. In July 1890, he immigrated to Seattle and in December of the same year began work as a day laborer at Port Blakely Mill Company in Kitsap County. In 1905 he moved to Seattle, working in a secretarial position at the Japanese Baptist Church from 1905 to 1908, and then as delivery man, from 1908 to 1914.
