TitleOmote-Senke Tea Ceremony School, Kodama Tea Ceremony, probably Seattle, September 14, 1952
PhotographerOgawa, Elmer, 1906-1970
Date1952
NotesOgawa 12-4-22b
Contextual NotesOmote-Senke is the name of one of the three houses or families that count their family founder as Sen Rikyu and are dedicated to carrying forward the "Way of Tea" that he developed. The other two "Ways of Tea" are Urasenke and Mushakojisenke. The three are together referred to as the "san-Senke." There are small stylistic differences between the different "Ways of Tea." Omote-Senke whisks the tea less than the Urasenke, creating less foam on the top of the tea. Omote-Senke uses a darkened bamboo tea whisk, while Urasenke uses untreated bamboo for its tea whisk.
