Contextual NotesHelen Neilson Rhodes was a painter, a block printer, a lithographer, an illustrator and a teacher. Best known for her blockprint illustrations for Paul Bunyan Comes West , she also won prizes in a number of contests--including the Seattle Art Institute, the International Salon of Watercolors and the Northwest Artists Annual Exhibition. She began teaching at the University of Washington in 1921 as an Instructor of Drawing. In 1927, she became an Assistant Professor in the school of Fine Arts and remained in that position for the next ten years.
