Contextual NotesThe Elite Photo Studio in Nanaimo, British Columbia, established in January of 1893, was operated by Larss and Pierce (Per Edward Larss and Wesley Cunningham Pierce). They sold a combination of landscape views, portraits and photographs of various subjects, including Northwest coast Indians. Among these were portraits of Angeline, the elderly daughter of Chief Seattle. The partnership broke up when Larss decided to leave Canada in 1896 and move to Colorado. When Larss left Nanaimo, Pierce went into business with E.C. Adams of Vancouver and opened a studio in Seattle.
