Historical NotesCreated by Seattle civic activist John F. Gordon, who was appointed as a consultant for the Seattle World's Fair by the Kennedy Administration in 1961, the Plaza of the States became the key ceremonial area for the duration of the fair. In addition to musical acts, theatrical performances, and programs honoring each of the 50 states, the Plaza was the official welcome center for all distinguished visitors to the fair, including Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, astronaut John Glenn, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, the Duke of Edinburgh, Elvis Presley, and ambassadors and dignitaries from around the world.
