Historical NotesThe Washington State Coliseum (now Key Arena) was built to house the World of Tomorrow Exhibit, the centerpiece of the Century 21 Exposition. The exhibit offered fairgoers a startling glimpse of the future through an elaborate multimedia presentation featuring images projected onto the translucent surfaces of thousands of cubed structures, described by designers as "suspended nebulae--much like a floating city." Ominous narration spoke of the day's most pressing concerns--the ever-present threat of nuclear war chief among them--and comforted visitors with the promises of a better life through the scientific advances and technological innovations of the future. The visions and voices telling the story repeated on an elaborate schedule every two minutes and forty seconds, meeting each new group as they moved along the winding ramp. Never before had an exhibit combined the use of staging, timing and electronics on as large a scale.
