On verso of image: This unique pole was carved from a single ceder tree by a tribe of Indians inhabitating Tongass Island, Southeastern Alaska. It is sixty feet high and eight feet in circumference and was intended as a monument to a distingushed family. The pole stood for nearly a century on Tongass Island. It was discovered by a party of Seattle businessmen in August 1899 and removed by them to Seattle and presented to the city.
