| Notes | From the introduction: The Bunraku puppet theater consists of three elements--the joruri narrative, the samisen accompaniment and the puppets' performance. These three elements in perfect coordination make up a harmonious whole, with the puppets, each manipulated by three men, acting out the tale told by the joruri narrator in musical chanting or in dramatic dialogues to the accompaniment of the samisen. The life of the Bunraku puppet theater depends on how sensitively and skillfully the joruri narrator tells the tale and how delicately the puppet manipulators express in the visual motions of the puppets the felt sensitivity of the narrator's tale.
Includes a detailed summary of the traditional dances and plays featured in the production, as well as a complete list of performance credits for the Bunraku Theatre Company. |
