Gayway 21 amusement zone, artist's rendering, Seattle World's Fair, 1961
TitleGayway 21 amusement zone, artist's rendering, Seattle World's Fair, 1961
AuthorRay, John C.
Publication Date1961
NotesTaken from the introduction: "The Seattle World's Fair will feature a Gayway 21 amusement zone unique in the history of world's fairs--a $2 million operation put together by two experts in the amusement business: J.W. "Patty" Conklin, a 50-year veteran of the business who puts together the amusements for the Canadian National Exposition in Toronto, and Harry Batt, who operates the Lake Ponchartrain Amusement Park in New Orleans. Under the direction of Conklin, Batt, and George Whitney, Director of Amusements and Concessions for the fair, John C. Ray, veteran amusement park designer and operator of San Diego's Belmont Park, designed the Gayway 21 pictured above on a three-acre tract north of the fair's famous Space Needle and the on-site terminal of the Alweg Monorail".

The legend following the introduction gives the name and description of every ride on the Gayway, each numbered to correspond to the ride's location on the map
Contextual Notes.

John C. Ray was a former director and second vice-president of the International Association of Amusement Parks. In addition to the overall layout and placement of amusement rides for the Gayway at the Seattle World's Fair, Ray is credited with structures at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Canada, Ponchartrain Park in New Orleans, the Palisades Amusement Park in New Jersey, Riverview Park in Chicago, the Pike in Long Beach, California, and Rocky Point Park in Providence, Rhode Island. Ray passed away on December 29, 1963, at the age of 52.
