This is a Ship's Passport partially printed on a vellum leaf with a scalloped-top margin. It grants the ship called the "William Little John" of 230 tons and navigated with 10 men on July 30, 1805 a Right of Passage. The passport has a large engraved lighthouse scene in the upper portion and a large paper seal in the lower left corner. Number 57 is printed and handwritten over the seal. It is signed by Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd US President and countersigned by the 4th US President, James Madison, who was then serving as Jefferson's Secretary of State.

| Contextual Notes | This Ships Passport, written in English only, has the top portion of the engraving cut away in a scallop pattern. This portion was sent to the American Consul in Algiers who then distributed it to Algerine [Barbary corsair] warships so that it could be examined and compared with its counterpart held by the Commander of the ship in question. No American ship carrying such a passport was to be harmed. This practice was a result of a requirement in the fourth article of the United States Treaty of September 5, 1795, with the Dey of Algiers. |
