| Notes | The center of the medal is stamped with bust portraits of Frances Willard and Matilda Carse. Stamped along the edge of the medal: Frances E. Willard, President of NWCTU. Matilda B. Carse, Founder of the Temple. For God and home and every land.
Frances Willard helped to found the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1873. As the organization's second president, she was a very influential temperance reformer and proponent of women's suffrage.
Matilda Carse was a businesswoman who became president of the Central Chicago WCTU in 1878. In this role, she sponsored reform activities to improve conditions for the working class in Chicago, was instrumental in developing the successful Woman's Temperance Publishing Association, and took on the creation of the Temperance Temple as her personal project. |
