Saint Paul's Temperance Society medal (obverse)
Saint Paul's Temperance Society medal (obverse)
TitleSaint Paul's Temperance Society medal (obverse)
Publication Daten.d.
NotesThe medal is stamped with an image of a man holding a banner that says "Sobriety" and a woman holding a banner that says "Domestic Comfort." With their other hand, they are touching a coat of arms that is decorated with the image of an animal and the letters "IHS." Above them are a cross and an angel placing a crown on the man's head, and below them are two children. Printed around the edge of the medal is: In Hoc Signo Vinces.

In hoc signo vinces means "With this sign you shall conquer." According to legend, Constantine I adopted this phrase as his motto following his heavenly vision prior to his battle against Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge.

Other temperance societies often used this same imagery on their medals. In some instances, both the man and woman are being crowned by angels.
