Stamped along the edge of the medal: Liberty and Independence - July 4, 1776.

Through the persuasion of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union at the end of the nineteenth century, most states had strong legislation which mandated that all students receive anti-alcohol education. The WCTU was also concerned with keeping the Sabbath day holy and worked within churches to educate children about temperance.
