Lord Frederick Roberts, the British commander in chief in India during the 1880's, helped to create the Army Temperance Society in India in 1888. By 1893, the association had 23, 000 members. In 1902, it was renamed the Royal Army Temperance Society and included soldiers from both India and Britain. (Source: Alcohol and Temperance in Modern History: A Global Encyclopedia, 2003).
In general, distinctive badges and medals were awarded to members of temperance societies to mark periods of abstinence that ranged from six months to twenty years. |
