Quote from document: "The university also plays a strong role in the imperialist system. It's "isolation" from society and ivory-towerness are a myth. As an institution of a society controlled by the capitalist ruling class, it serves the needs of that class. Imperialism rears its ugly head in the shape of recruiters for corporations in whose interests the colonial empire exists; in research that is done on weapon systems and counter-insurgency; in the content of courses that indoctrinate students to think that the Free World is groovy with people all over "hummin and strummin" and digging the U.S., and not to think about the exploitative and oppressive nature of the capitalist-imperialist system; and in ROTC, the officer machine for the army of imperialism."
Background information: Helix was a biweekly, underground newspaper first published on March 23, 1967, by a group of volunteer workers. Its manifesto declared, "[Helix] is dedicated to no cause, no interests, no point of view; it is dedicated to you." (Crowley, Walt. Rites of Passage: A Memoir of the Sixties in Seattle. Seattle: University of Washington Press. p. 63)
