Quote from document: " The vast majority of our generation is totally unaware of the fact that the end of 1945 and the beginning of 1946 saw the greatest troop revolt that has ever occured in a victorious army. This was the "Bring the Troops Home" movement following WWII.... Today the antiwar movement is able to mobilize tens of thousands of Americans to protest the War in Vietnam and demand that the troops be brought home immediately. A dynamic force in that movement is the active duty GI. For the first time in this century U.S. troops are demonstrating against a war while it is in progress."
Background information: "During the first two weeks of January 1946, four months after the surrender of Japan ended World War II, enlisted personnel and officers in the U.S. Army and other military services took part in massive demonstrations and protests at bases throughout the world demanding to be sent home. The specific focus of the protests was for an end to the abrupt slowdown in ongoing demobilization. The largest demonstrations took place in the Philippines, Hawaii, France, Germany, and Guam, with others, large and small, taking place in Japan, Korea, India, Burma, Austria, and Great Britain, and on the U.S. mainland."
