| Contextual Notes | Glenn Hughes (1894-1964), director of the drama program at the University of Washington for more than 30 years, gained international fame as the pioneer of theater in the round. His experiments in a friend's penthouse apartment led to the construction of the Penthouse Theatre, the world's first modern arena theater. His innovative curriculum and state of the art facilities made the University of Washington's drama program one of the best known in the nation.
