Born in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Dr. Koike had worked as a physician in Okayama Prefecture. He moved to Seattle in 1916 to begin a medical practice, which he established in 1917. From 1919-1924 he taught himself to write in English and then translated over 30 volumes of literature from Japanese to English. He was also the leader and editor of the bilingual monthly magazine Notan, published from 1925-1929. He emerged as the leader of the Seattle Camera Club in 1924, with more than 20 other Japanese photographers who rose to national and international acclaim. |
