| Contextual Notes | Mark Tobey was a leading painter of the Northwest School who became famous for his energetic style of abstraction. Tobey taught at the Cornish School before traveling to Europe for a year. He returned to Seattle and continued to teach out of his studio and move around between New York, Chicago, Seattle, England and other European countries. He was awarded first prize in the XXIX Venice Biennale and a Guggenheim International award. Tobey moved to Switzerland in 1960 and lived the rest of his life there, visiting Seattle during the summer.
Basil Langton was a British-born actor, director and theater manager. In the 1960's he began to photograph artists at work and was married to Louise Soelberg who was a close friend of Mark Tobey. |
