Contextual NotesKate Carmack was the common law wife of George W. Carmack. Her brother Skookum Jim was George's mining partner. George and Kate had one daughter named Graphie, and lived together until 1900 when George left Kate for another women. Kate tried to win back George and prove their marriage was legal, but these attempts failed. She was left destitute and moved to Carcross, Alaska where she died in 1920.
