| Contextual Notes | Bagley, Clarence (1843-1932): Born in Troy Grove, Illinois, and arrived in Seattle in October 1860 at the age of 17, along with his parents. He became a printer, publisher, and writer, a founder of the Washington State Historical Society, and the region's first and preeminent historian.
