| Contextual Notes | Harry C. Bauer (1902-1978) was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, and graduated from the St. Louis Library School in 1931. During World War II, he was a combat intelligence officer for the United States Air Force and earned a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Air Medal. Bauer was the assistant library director at the University of Washington from 1945 to 1947 and director of the library from 1947 to 1959. He then served as a professor of library science until 1967. Bauer retired from the Army Reserves as a colonel and was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the American Legion and Kiwanis Club.
Lulu Fairbanks (1888-1968) was born in Michigan. She came to Seattle in 1916, where she worked as a teacher. From 1923 to 1956, she edited the Alaska Weekly newspaper. Fairbanks was active in many Alaska promotional and charitable activities.
