Contextual NotesGeorge Yeoman Pocock (1891 - 1976) was a master boatbuilder who made racing shells for the University of Washington's champion crews. He built them in the university's Shell House on the shore of Lake Washington. Pocock made many design innovations which made his boats much faster than those of the competition. He built racing shells for nearly every racing college in the country and several abroad. His reputation spread as he strove to maintain the highest possible quality at a price that even small colleges or high schools could afford. His boats went on to win many national and Olympic championships.
