| Title | Seattle Central Labor Council letter to labor bodies affiliated with the American Federation of Labor regarding the true history of the Seattle general strike, May 20, 1919 |
| Author | Central Labor Council of Seattle and Vicinity |
| Date of Publication | 1919 |
| Notes | This letter was sent to "Labor Bodies Affiliated with" the American Federation of Labor by the Central Labor Council of Seattle and Vicinity on May 20, 1919. It informs the recipient that the Seattle general strike was instigated by the attempt of "organized employers... to crush the splendid Labor movement of the city". The strike is acclaimed as "a magnificent solidarity upon the part of local unionists", as evidenced by the greatly reduced crime rate during the strike itself. The Council argues that, in an attempt to contain the labor movement, big business conspired to spread lies about the strike and to present Mayor Ole Hanson as the "hero who suppressed the Seattle revolution" -- though the Council notes that his national speaking tour has proved that "he is an ass and not a hero". In order to combat Hanson's distortion of the truth, the Seattle Central Labor Council has produced an authorized history of the general strike, and encloses a copy. Information is offered regarding how to order additional copies. |
