Roy John Kinnear letter to R. W. Felton, city editor of the Seattle Star, March 15, 1924
TitleRoy John Kinnear letter to R. W. Felton, city editor of the Seattle Star, March 15, 1924
AuthorKinnear, Roy John
Date of Publication1924
NotesIn this letter, Roy J. Kinnear, in his capacity as President of the Associated Industries of Seattle, informs R. W. Felton, the city editor for the Seattle Star, of his organization's position on a "closed shop agreement" for the building trades in Seattle. Kinnear insists that the Associated Industries support "the right of all individuals to join together in the protection of their own interests" but objects to the closed shop as a situation that works "to the detriment of any other citizen who desires to... work and prosper". Kinnear reiterates a willingness to see "the Unions go on and prosper", but notes that the city is experiencing a remarkable boom of prosperity and laments any action which would disrupt that course with "a fight saturated with selfish motives".
Contextual NotesRoy John Kinnear (1881-1959) was the son of Seattle pioneer and businessman George Kinnear. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1905, and worked in his family's real estate business for much of his life. Kinnear was the president of the Associated Industries of Seattle, an anti-union group organized by local businessmen, in the early 1920s, and served as a Republican in the Washington State House of Representatives from 1927 to 1947.
