| Notes | John Franklin Miller, the Congressman for Washington's 1st District at the time, writes to former Senator Watson C. Squire acknowledging a letter on the subject of Mount Rainier's name. Miller alludes to the controversy over whether the mountain should be named "Mount Tacoma" or "Mount Rainier", and reassures Squire that the federal Board of Geographic Names has consistently supported the name "Mount Rainier" each time it has been asked to deliver a judgment. |
| Contextual Notes | John Franklin Miller (1862-1936) served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1917 to 1931. He represented the First Congressional District of Washington as a Republican. He also served as the Mayor of Seattle from 1908 through 1910.
Watson Carvosso Squire, 1838-1926, was an attorney, Civil War veteran, industrialist, governor of Washington Territory from 1884-1887, and senator for Washington State from 1889-1897. |
