TitleHarry Myers letter to Roger Toll discussing his history of early Mount Rainier climbs and suggesting a reevaluation of Lieutenant Kautz's 1857 climb, May 11, 1920
AuthorMyers, Harry
Date of Publication1920
NotesIn his letter to Toll, the Superintendent of Mount Rainier National Park, Myers describes his plan to publish his Mount Rainier climbing history in the next issue of "The Mountaineer" and expresses his wish to pay special attention to Lieutenant Kautz's 1857 climb, which was often dismissed as a failed attempt. According to Myers, "I made the suggestion to Harry Weer that at the end of my article we would have opinions by three people to the extent of one hundred to one hundred and twenty five words each, as to: (1) The route Kautz took. (2) How far he got. (3) What credit should be given him for his achievement. Harry will write one of these opinions and I am asking you to write another and Charles Albertson, of Aberdeen, whom I think you do not know, the third." Myers notes that very little attention has been paid to Kautz's climb and states that he does "not feel in any way inclined to discredit Stevens and Van Trump in this affair but my opinion is that Kautz should receive credit for just exactly what he did, which in the past seems to have been over-looked."
Contextual NotesMyer's original history of the early climbs of Mount Rainier appeared in Mountaineers Club newsletter, 'The Mountaineer,' Volume 13, Number 1, originally published in November, 1920.

Lieutenant Kautz climbed Mount Rainier in 1857 but was not given credit for the first summit because he went only reached an elevation of 12,000 feet. Because of this, credit for the first recorded summit of the Mountain went to P.B. Van Trump and Hazard Stevens who climbed the mountain several years later in 1870.
