| Title | Harry Myers letter to George Otis Smith describing the publication of his history of Mount Rainier and uncovering the identity of three early climbers (one of whom was Smith), February 18, 1921 |
| Author | Myers, Harry |
| Date of Publication | 1921 |
| Notes | Myers explains his reason for writing Smith, describing his attempts to verify a claim made by Major Ingraham that three men from Snohomish climbed Mount Rainier in 1885. Myers writes that he initially dismissed this idea after his research turned up no further information on the men. However, after his publication of the early history of Mount Rainier in the Mountaineers Club newsletter, "The Mountaineer, " Dr. Hinman, a member of the club, sent him a letter with a clipping about the climb identifying the three men as Professor Russell, George Otis Smith (the recipient of Myer's letter), and Bailey Willis. The three men climbed the mountain in 1896 via the northeastern slope, making their ascent the second climb by several years. |
| Contextual Notes | Myer's original history of the early climbs of Mount Rainier appeared in Mountaineers Club newsletter, 'The Mountaineer,' Volume 13, Number 1, originally published in November, 1920. |
