| Title | Bailey Willis letter to Harry Myers describing his 1896 ascent of Mount Rainier, December 27, 1919 |
| Author | Willis, Bailey |
| Date of Publication | 1919 |
| Notes | Willis responds to Myer's inquiries about his summit of Mount Rainier in 1896 with I.C. Russell and George Otis Smith. Myers was interested in gathering more information about the climb to include in his article about the early climbing history of Mount Rainier. Willis, Smith, and Russell were geologists working for the U.S. Geological Survey at the time of their ascent in 1896. While on Mount Rainier, they conducted a study of the mountain's glaciers and rocks. Their report on the geological aspects of the mountain, along with an account of their trip appeared in the 18th Annual Report of the U.S. Geological Survey in 1898. According to Willis, "The wedge of Russell's account is what is now called Steamboat Prow. We went S. by W. from from the apex of Steamboat Prow to the nunataks (crags projecting above ice surfaces) in the middle of Emmons Glacier (10600') and zig zagged thence to the S.E. side of the crater ruins." Willis concludes his letter with "best wishes for the New Year to yourself and the Mountaineers." |
| Contextual Notes | Myer's original history of the early climbs of Mount Rainier appeared in Mountaineers Club newsletter, 'The Mountaineer,' Volume 13, Number 1, originally published in November, 1920. |
