Harry Myers letter to Bailey Willis inquiring about his 1896 summit of Mount Rainier, December 23, 1919
TitleHarry Myers letter to Bailey Willis inquiring about his 1896 summit of Mount Rainier, December 23, 1919
AuthorMyers, Harry
Date of Publication1919
NotesMyers wrote to Willis after reading about his 1896 ascent in an article from the 1915 Mountaineer Annual, the newsletter for the Mountaineers club. Willis made the ascent with George Otis Smith and I.C. Russell. Professor Landis joined the men for part of the climb but remained at their Carbon River camp while the rest of the men made the ascent to the summit. Myers inquires about the particular route the men took, noting that he would like to include the information in his article about the early climbing history of Mount Rainier. According to Myers, "If you have an account of this climb or you can advise me where such an account may be found I should like to put it in the record. In the 1915 account you speak of the "Cleaver above Little Tahoma" and I have wondered whether you referred to "Steamboat Prow" but if that is not the case your ascent is by a somewhat different route than that now used on that side."
Contextual NotesMyer's original history of the early climbs of Mount Rainier appeared in Mountaineers Club newsletter, 'The Mountaineer,' Volume 13, Number 1, originally published in November, 1920.

Willis, Smith, and Russell were geologists working for the U.S. Geological Survey at the time of their ascent in 1896. While on Mount Rainier, they conducted a study of the mountain's glaciers and rocks. Their report on the geological aspects of the mountain, along with an account of their trip appeared in the 18th Annual Report of the U.S. Geological Survey in 1898.
