Alfred Parker letter to Harry Myers regarding Parker's trip to Mount Baker and the climb of Little Tahoma by Mazamas members, July 15, 1920
TitleAlfred Parker letter to Harry Myers regarding Parker's trip to Mount Baker and the climb of Little Tahoma by Mazamas members, July 15, 1920
AuthorParker, Alfred
Date of Publication1920
NotesAlfred Parker, the Corresponding Secretary for the Mazamas, writes Myers to decline his offer to stay with him in Seattle during Parker's travels to Mount Baker. Parker also addresses a climb of Little Tahoma undertaken by two Mazamas members during a club trip to Mount Rainier in 1919. On August 14, 1919, Lee Benedict and James Meredith climbed to what they mistakenly thought was the summit of Little Tahoma. During the descent, Meredith fell and was killed. Later inspection of their route proved that it would have been impossible for them to reach the summit. According to Parker, "we are positive beyond all doubt that they did not reach the main summit at all, and as for signing the record up there it might interest you to know that there was no record on the summit. We inspected the chimney down which Meredith's brains were spattered, and are assured that by the route which they chose it would be impossible to reach the top. Between the top of that crag and the highest one, which was reached by the others, was a horrible saw-toothed, knife-edged, jagged and crumbling ridge, which no living thing could have traversed, and the very thought of attempting it would give on chills."
Contextual NotesThe Mazamas are an Oregon climbing group "organized on the summit of Mount Hood, in 1894. The purposes of the club are to explore the mountains, to disseminate authoritative and scientific information concerning them, and to encourage the preservation of forests and other features of mountain scenery in their natural beauty." Membership is open to "any person who as climbed to the summit of a snow-peak on which there is at least one living glacier, and the top of which cannot be reached by any other means than on foot."
