| Title | Asahel Curtis letter to William Colby hoping to establish a better connection between the Mountaineers and the Sierra Club, September 15, 1909 |
| Author | Curtis, Asahel, 1874-1941 |
| Date of Publication | 1909 |
| Notes | Asahel Curtis hoped that William Colby, as secretary of the Sierra Club, could use his influence with John Muir, president of the club, to encourage him to write a small note for publication in the Mountaineer's bulletin. Curtis felt that "the work of the mountain clubs in the West is very important and the more we get together on the different things which we individually want, the more weight we will have on all public matters which the clubs are interested in, and I hope that the three Western clubs will form a strong friendship, which will aid us all very much." |
| Contextual Notes | John Muir was a prominent naturalist who was an early advocate of wilderness preservation. He actively campaigned for the protection of Yosemite (including Yosemite Valley), Sequoia, Grand Canyon and Mt. Rainier as National Parks.
Muir cofounded the Sierra Club in 1892 where he served as president of the club for 22 years until his death in 1914. |
